After 22 years at the helm of Arsenal Football Club, it was announced that Arsène Wenger’s tenure would be ended at the end of the 2017/18 campaign. It has now been confirmed that his successor will be Spaniard, Unai Emery.

Emery became available after he left his position as PSG manager at the end of the season. His contract was not extended by the club. The former Sevilla boss left on a high winning the domestic treble in Paris. However, it wasn’t deemed to be enough as the French giants are clearly targeting Europe’s most elite competition, the Champions League.

The news of Emery’s appointment had initially caught a lot of people by surprise. This being due to the heavy speculation that former Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Arteta, was set to take over the job and replace his ex-manager Wenger.

Unexpected, yes. Although, many Arsenal fans have taken well to the news of Emery coming in. it’s not really hard to see why, he is still a relatively young coach at just 46-years-old but at the same time he has a wealth of experience already under his belt. Emery moved to the French capital Paris in 2016 after managing Sevilla in Spain for three years prior. It has to be said his spell with the Spanish side was a success, he secured three successive Europa League titles and in the process beat a side that his new team Arsenal have struggled to deal with in recent times, Liverpool.

There were rumoured to have been around ten people interviewed for the position and after a long process the Arsenal owners decided that Emery is the best man to take on a big task. Speaking on his arrival at the club he said, “I have met Stan and Josh Kroenke and it’s clear they have great ambitions for the club and are committed to bringing future success. I’m excited about what we can do together, and I look forward to giving everyone who loves Arsenal some special moments and memories.”

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis gave his thoughts on the appointment saying, “Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.”

It was announced earlier this week that Emery would be appointed, and it was all but confirmed yesterday when Emery leaked some content on his official website, making it very clear he would be coming to England for his next job.

This will certainly be a different job to what he has taken previously, he is essentially going to be replacing one of the most iconic footballing figures to date. Arsenal fans have not seen change since 1996 and it will definitely be a new feeling around the Emirates for the 2018/19 season. Emery most definitely has big boots to fill.

What do you guys think, is Unai Emery the right choice to take the Gunners forward?
